Humans might land on Mars within the next 10 years, and some of today’s children could even move to live on the Red Planet. How cool is that?
But Mars is very different from Earth, so how do we figure out what’s needed to live there? Interestingly, some places on Earth feel a lot like Mars. One such location is the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah, a space analog facility that supports research on human operations specifically for Mars.
We’re very excited to host Sergii Iakymov, Director of the Mars Desert Research Station, who will share how they help scientists and engineers test new technologies, train astronauts, and study the physical, psychological, and operational challenges of long-duration space missions.
About Sergii Iakymov - Sergii is an aerospace engineer, analog astronaut and Director of the Mars Desert Research Station located in Utah. His many duties at the station include crew selection and logistics, maintenance, resupply, mission support and crew rotation. Sergii has led several analog Mars missions that focused on human behavior and operations in space. Last year he was a crew member of NASA's Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA) mission at Johnson Space Center, contributing to a 45-day Mars simulation. Join us as Sergii shares his experience and insights on space exploration, analog missions, and the future of human missions to Mars.
